Net Zero Journey For Your Business

With our simple 10 step process to Net Zero, at Greenarc Energy we’re here to help.

How can you achieve Net Zero?

Here is the overview of our 10 step plan for business fuel users to get you from where you are are today to as close as you can to Net Zero by 2050. We have been through this process for our own businesses – it’s based on our own experience, the things we got right, and more importantly, the things we got wrong.

You may choose not to do all 10 steps at once or in the order below, and you could have already started. However, you will certainly have to consider each of the steps outlined below.

Scroll through each of our steps below.

Step 1 - Where are you now?

Step 1 - Where are you now?

Everybody will start from a different position, you need to consider how your business uses oil be that for transport fuel, heating, or power generation.
How well are your buildings insulated, what is the age and type of boiler? How efficient are your business processes and do you generate excess heat in your manufacturing processes?
How far have you gone to minimise energy waste and do you have a formal process for measuring your energy efficiency? Click the button below to watch our video.

Step 2 - What is motivating your journey?

Step 2 - What is motivating your journey?

Is your only focus to zero your carbon footprint whatever the cost? Do you want to do this in the most financially efficient way? Or are you somewhere in the middle? So why does this matter? Well this may not change what you have to do, it will almost certainly change the timescale of when you do each step. There are plenty of good business reasons to make the move to Net Zero, but not every business will see the benefits in the same way. Your motivation will be bespoke to your business. Step 3 - Reduce the carbon footprint of what you have got today.

Step 3 - Reduce the carbon footprint of what you have got today.

This means looking at efficiency of your current boilers, your set up, how you control them… all to make sure you burn as little fuel as possible and that’s just going to save you money and reduce your footprint. Easy wins.
Can you make a simple change to bio-fuel? Do you want to carbon offset your current fossil fuel usage?
This can be done today. Click the button below to watch our video.

Step 4 - Improving energy efficiency of buildings and processes.

Step 4 - Improving energy efficiency of buildings and processes.

Any business lower than C and you will need to make some major investments into the insulation and general heat efficiency of your business.

Simply put, and in general terms, the lower your Commercial EPC rating, the bigger the cost to get your buildings to a reasonable level of energy efficiency and make it fit for a low carbon heating system. Click the button below to watch our video.

Step 5 - Prepare for electric vehicles

Step 5 - Prepare for electric vehicles

From 2030, all new UK cars will have to be hybrid, or electric and from 2035, all new cars will be 100% electric only. That does not mean you can’t retain your older petrol or diesel fleet beyond these dates, but expect the costs of running them to grow. From carbon taxes to low emission zone charges, the reality of transport is that over time, fossil fuels will be removed from the vehicles we drive. Click the button below to watch our video.

Slide 6 - Solar energy

Step 6 - Solar energy

If you have a decent sized roof, and have the right to put solar panels on the roof and the business case for installing is very strong – and as time of use, or smart tariffs become the norm, having self-generation will be a huge benefit. Click the button below to watch our video.

Step 7 - Battery storage

Step 7 - Battery storage

The other way to store electricity is to have a battery, charge it up when its cheap overnight or capture surplus Solar PV energy and use it when you need it. Click the button below to watch our video.

Step 8 - Heat pumps

Step 8 - Heat pumps

If you’ve decided that you want to electrify your heating system, because you’ve got a highly efficient buildings and you’re managing your electricity it should be a relatively simple process to implement either an air source or ground source heat pump. Click the button below to watch our video.

Step 9 - Air circulation

Step 9 - Air circulation

One of the downsides to a highly efficient buildings are that they often lack natural ventilation.
To avoid the challenges of stale air, mechanical air circulation can both keep the air fresh but also allow you to transport excess warm air to parts of business where it is cooler. Click the button below to watch our video.

Step 10 - Control and maintenance

Step 10 - Control and maintenance

One of the big shifts in the move to Net Zero is a change from large oversized boilers to a range of different technologies that have to work together whether that’s Solar PV, Heat Pumps, EV Cars, Batteries or air circulation they all have to work as one and that will require a much more sophisticated set of controls and annual maintenance.
